Transforming exotic weeds into art materials
Washington Post illustrator and writer Patterson Clark turns ”alien weeds” — invasive (non-native) plants removed from Washington, D.C.-area parks —into paper, pigment, pens, paintbrushes, printing blocks, and other materials.
Pictured is Clark’s “11-weed blend” woodblock print made from fibers of eleven local invasive plants, white mulberry soot, and bark inks.
His work is both beautiful and educational, helping to increase awareness of natural threats to ecosystems.
